IM-5 launcher, a non-lethal personal protection device

I know that many women have to walk to and from work, or to and from the bus stops to get to work. Sometimes they work long hours and have to walk home after dark and even in the middle of the night. Now all this poses great risk. But what are they doing about it? Life has to go on and so here is a new non-lethal personal protection device called the IM-5 launcher. It is a five-shot launcher that fires five frangible, plastic projectiles filled with an intensely hot PAVA powder. This is enough to disable an attacker from as far away as forty feet. This specific device takes the crown from the other self protection devices that we have mentioned earlier. The maker, Avurt, has also developed a unique self-defense and awareness training program incorporating the IM-5 launcher called Living in 360. So you can enroll for it and become a toughie. Take a look at the short video on the company’s site.

But our white girl is indeed very lucky…cause the darn thing worked in spite of the meltdown!

Nissan shows safety technology that helps avoid collisions

In a bid to make its cars even safer, Nissan will soon fit its cars with a gas pedal that lifts to warn of possible collisions, at the same time the car will automatically stop if driver takes his foot off the accelerator in response to the warning. The technology used combines radar sensors and a computer system that gauges the car's speed and the distance to a vehicle in front. Cars with the new safety features will be available this year in Japan, and next year in the U.S. Another experimental system showed off by the company hopes to tackle dunk driving, which causes more than 600 fatal accidents-a-year in Japan. They have developed a system that measures alcohol levels in a driver's sweat from sensors in the gearshift. The system almost locks down the ignition and issues an electronic warning.

Titanic-DNA Watch

I can buy few cars with this watch. It can costs up to £75,000. Why is it expensive? It is because this watch is made from a rare material, the metal from the hull of the Titanic and so it is called the Titanic-DNA. It comes in different patterns some with diamonds and gold.
However, you can still get a cheaper for £4,500, probably is a basic plain one without those blings. There are only 2,012 of Titanic-DNA watches will be sold.

Air pollution to postpone some events at 2008 Bejing Olympics

China will soon be hosting the biggest sporting event the Olympics, and the middle kingdom is leaving no stone unturned in the preparations. However not everything is right as the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) yesterday gave a statement that some of the events at the 2008 Beijing Olympics could be postponed due to air pollution. He said, “Sports with short durations would not be a problem, but endurance sports like cycling are examples of competitions that might be postponed or delayed.” China has pumped billions of dollars to reduce the pollution but to no effect. Even extreme steps such as shifting of factories out-of-town to even shutting some down have been taken, but non-stop construction activity and heavy car sales are just increasing air pollution by the day.

The Cardboard Bridge

Reading about the cardboard bridge reminds me about the old Oriental story that I heard when I was a kid. Apparently a giant had asked a little girl to bring him fire in paper. If she failed, he would eat her up. The poor girl went hunting for something she knew that was impossible. She came across a wise sage who helped her make a paper lantern and place a candle in it, thus the giant got his fire in paper and the girl was free. My point in this story is that we often underestimate the strength of paper. Now take the case of the very resourceful architect Shigeru Ban, who has built a bridge across the Gardon River (southern France) that, is made out of cardboard. It is made out of 281 cardboard tubes and is strong enough to carry 20 people at a time. The steps of the bridge are constructed from recycled paper and plastic. The foundation however is made up wooden boxes packed with sand.

Forget Tesla, Panasonic develops AA battery powered car which runs at 100 km/hr

We often underestimate the humble AA battery or the pencil cell, but Panasonic unleashed its true potential with the Worlds first AA battery-powered plane and now with a car which runs at 100 km/h and is powered by AA cells. Powering this space age car is a battery pack with 192 Panasonic Oxyride AA cells which are 1.5 times more powerful than normal alkaline batteries. The car is 3.3 meters long has a F1 styled cabin complete with a fin and rudder for better stability and control. In the runs it touched a max speed of 122 km/hr thus entering into the Guinness book of records. The body is made from aramide honeycomb which is also used in bulletproof vests.

World’s Highest Resolution HDTV Surgical Camera - Ever

Steven F. Palter, MD, has participated in the evaluation of the highest resolution surgical system ever created. He captured some pretty neat footage which can be seen in the upcoming National Geographic HD special “Inside The Living Body” which will be the first surgical procedure broadcast in HD. This system allows the recorded footage to be viewed from home at a higher resolution and quality than practically any surgeon has ever seen in the OR. In the evaluation surgeons were working for the first time with a chip that was imaging at 1920 x 1080p (beyond WUXGA) providing crisp and clear images. The Karl Storz Image1 HD Video System is displayed on a 16:9 ”WideView monitor” with the same native resolution (1920 x 1200) so that the full 1920 x 1080 image can be displayed without degradation. The upside of using this is that it will maximize the horizontal field of view of the surgeon.

Details of the KSEA HDTV Surgical System - The Karl Storz Image1 HD Video System is unique in having a native chip resolution of 1920 x 1080p in the first ever (for surgery) 16:9 aspect ratio (Full HD). This HD system employs a 3CCD camera with an acquisition resolution (at the chip) of 1920 x 1080. This translates to approximately 2-megapixel video. The image is progressively scanned outputting 60 full frames per second, versus the 60 half-frames or fields output by interlaced systems. This provides full detail with twice the frequency and also minimizes motion artifacts caused by rapid movement- vital for smooth surgery.
Advantages of The System:
1. Highest resolution ever for a medical endoscopic camera. Allows the surgeon to see finer detail and clearer images. It remains to be seen if this will allow the visualization of smaller disease implants but it seems likely.
2. This high resolution is native from the chip not interpolated by the camera system or faked with post chip processing.
3. Progressive scanned image smoothes the motion seen and reduces motion artifacts.
4. First-ever wide 16:9 aspect ratio. Gives more lateral detail and information during surgery. Just like the differences you see in wide aspect ratio TV’s vs standard.
5. First ever ability to record images at full 1080 HD resolution for teaching and archiving.

The $10 Million X Prize - Calling All Green Automakers

Here is a call for all green automakers. More than 30 teams have sent in letters of intent to participate in the $10 million Automotive X Prize. The participating cars run on a range of fuels, including electricity, natural gas, diesel or unleaded gasoline. But, they need to get at least 100 mpg and complete a long distance race. The terms don’t end here only. All of them must be low emission vehicles with a genuine business plan. One last term is that you should have a strong plan to fabricate 10,000 units of your entry at a reasonable price. Among the strong contenders are the Tesla Motors, Kinetic vehicles and ZAP motors. You will also see the FuelVapor Technologies’ FuelVapor Alé concept car in the competition. The X Prize Foundation will be using the upcoming auto shows to find sponsors for making $10 million in cash.

Shure’s New Luxury Sound-isolating Earbuds

The new sound-isolating earbuds from luxury audio equipment maker Shure, the SE420, are not plated with gold like the iCans but still cost more than the latter. All thanks to the technology behind the new earbuds. The Shure SE40 is gifted to cut off 90 percent of ambient noise and still manages to pack two drivers, tweeter and woofer, into its minuscule body. They sit perfectly and tightly in the ear like most of the canalphones. Personally, the $400 price tag is all for the technology, nothing for the looks.

Ferrari F430 Scuderia to be unveiled by Michael Schumacher soon

Prancing horse is spotted again. This time on a new Ferrari auto christened as the F430 Scuderia. It was rumored hard that the company would name this latest car as the 'Challenge Stradale' or 'Light Pista' , but again rumors cannot always be true…right? But you certainly can trust Ferrari for presenting a car that gives superb performance both on and off the track. All set to be unveiled by famed F1 driver Michael Schumacher at the upcoming Frankfurt Autoshow, the Scuderia drops quite a bit of weight (100 kg) and increases power to 510 bhp. Its version of Ferrari's 4.3L V8 produces 510 horsepower instead of 483. That, combined with its weight reduction, will significantly boost its performance stake. Zero-to-60 times should drop into the 3.5-3.6-second range.

Sprint and Sanyo present Katana DLX and Katana II in chic colors

Every single minute a new phone is unveiled in some or the other part of this world. This is not any research study, it’s my personal belief. Every cell phone maker is set to outdo its rival and most of the time they themselves are offering better device then the previous ones. Either ways, we are in gain. Recently Sanyo too has teamed up with Sprint to launch the new Katana DLX clamshell cell phone to complement its not-too-old Katana II. This newer edition provides easy access to Sprint's exclusive multimedia content, including the Sprint Music Store. It also offers more total download capacity (21MB) than the former Katana. This has boosted the device's capacity for games, ring tones, applications and more. Other tech features include a microSD memory card slot (up to 4GB in size), a 1.3 megapixel camera, EV-DO connectivity, compatibility with Sprint's Power Vision services, MP3 playback, speakerphone functionality, and PIM applications.

The Batman home theater room measures 16 feet wide and 20 feet deep with a low ceiling. Despite the fact that the very space was damaged to some extent owing to flooding, the theater room looks so gorgeous that you can’t even think it was once in a messy state. To save space and to accommodate seating, the installer fabricated top-lit boxes to showcase the figurines, in the form of in-wall sidelights or sconces. The in-wall speakers and Novawall acoustic paneling on the front wall makes the startling home theater look munch pricier than it is.

Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe Auctioned off for $1.6 Million

Sometimes, I feel like these charity auctions have become more a show than fundraisers. Leave this aside, a Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe was lately auctioned off for $1.6 million in order to raise funds for the Elton John AIDS Foundation. It’s a great jump for any charity auction if we talk about the actual pricing of the roadster, which falls between $400K and $500K. The Phantom Drophead Coupe is power driven by a 6.75 liter V12 engine that pumps out 453 horsepower and 531 pound-feet of torque. And, if you are interested in vintage Rolls Royce cars, a real-estate developer Richard J. Solove, who is well-known for his collection of Rolls Royce cars, will auction off 13 of the 14 Rolls Royce cars.

Nintendo Wii Wheel goes with Mario Kart

Bearing an uncanny resemblance to the black wheel we got free with the Wii GT Pro Series Game, the Wheel with the Mario Kart Game seems to have some extra buttons to help navigate the kart. Nintendo also promises more action with "more" online competitors, which is a good thing. The game will debut in Q1 2008 which will be more painful than waiting for the iPhone. The pricing of the game or the stand-alone wheel is not known
